Interviews: Daytona Lights

Our new favourite band are Daytona Lights, the indie quintet will be on blazing up your screens playing themselves on Hollyoaks, we caught up with the lads to find out what all this life imitating art imitating life business is about.

Daytona Lights

Can you just start by telling us who you are individually?
Hi I’m Dan Lawrence I'm on lead vocals and occasionally guitar.
I’m Matt Gill on guitar and various other instruments.
I’m Laurence Saywood on bass guitar.
I’m Sam Fordham on drums.
And I’m Louis Souyave on lead guitar.

You’re a real band already but you are coming into Hollyoaks and the storyline is that you become this band…Confusing?
Dan:
Yeah it’s really weird, it’s taken some time for us to get our head’s around it but we’re coming in as ourselves, albeit exaggerated versions of ourselves, but we’re coming in to mix it up a little.
Laurence: I think we’ll be playing ourselves but maybe the more the show goes on perhaps we’ll get a little bit more exaggerated, who knows, you’ll have to wait and see.

Mix it up a little you say? Hoping be ladies men then?
In unison:
Yes!
Matt: I think some will have more luck than others in that department.

When can we expect to see you?
Dan: October time, we’re really looking forward to it.

The band were formed in Hackney, now you are up here (Liverpool) together, how is that working out?
Laurence:
We live in this big lovely house together, we looked at a couple but what swung the one we’re in now was that Craig from Big Brother was the landlord!

What, The Craig? Was he locked up in the cupboard by Avid Merrion?
Louis:
Haha, Yes, that’s the fella we’re going to a party of his tonight actually, I think it’s going to be full of estate agents because that is what he is now really. (Since that party The Daytona Lights have revealed to us that it was indeed full of estate agents)
Sam: He’s a really nice guy he’s done up all of these terraced houses up on our street and is now renting them out, he’s let an elderly couple live in one of the houses rent free too.
Dan: It is a really nice house though plenty of room for band practice.

The song you performed on the music show was called White Horses what is it about?
Dan:
It’s ambiguous really, you can make of it what you will, we hope people like it as much as we do as it is a really upbeat tune.

When can we expect an album?
Dan:
We are in the midst of recording a new album right now so you can expect one soon, we hope it will all come together during the show.

What else gets the Daytona Lights moving? We don’t mean in a Craig Phillips realtor sort of way we mean musically?
Louis: We’ve been listening to a bit of Brian Jonestown massacre after watching Dig! They’re superb.

So if you’ve seen Dig! and you like the Brian Jonestown Massacre does that mean you don’t like The Dandy Warhols?
Sam:
I don’t really think that to be honest, you can like both but it’s a great movie one of the best music documentaries out there.

Who gets the most compliments on their dress sense?
Matt:
Me!
Louis: I think it is probably Laurence, look at him he’s very dapper.
Laurence: Why thank you chaps!

What is next for Daytona Lights then?
Laurence:
Well we are on screen for a few months hoping to enjoy this experience on Hollyoaks and get our music out there.
