Interviews: Ed Sheeran
Autumn-flamed musical maestro Ed Sheeran serenaded us in show two with his new record The A-Team. Amongst other queries, we wanted to know which member of said team Ed most identified with. Turns out the song has absolutely nothing to do with the synonymous 80s TV show. Nevertheless, we'd already written our questions, so we went ahead regardless...
If you were to go away to a desert island, what item of clothing could you not live without?
Oh, a hoodie, definitely. I wear a hoodie every single day, unless it’s really hot.
It would have to be a cool-climate desert island then I suppose…
Oh yeah!
Your new song’s a bit deep isn’t it? What’s the story behind the track?
It was written about a woman I met whilst I was volunteering for this charity called ‘Crisis At Christmas’.
It’s certainly a departure from the Nando’s song, which I’ve seen you do on YouTube with Example…
Yeah, well I write melancholic songs, but that doesn’t mean I don’t have a sense of humour.
When you’re writing a song, do you usually start with a story?
It depends. That one came really quickly. It took about fifteen, twenty minutes to write, but other singles often take longer.
Is this single a good indication of the rest of the album?
Yeah, the rest of the album’s just a basic singer-songwriter album – songs with an acoustic guitar.
Who is your biggest musical influence?
There’s a few. When I was younger it was people like Bob Dylan and Van Morrison, and then as I got older it was people like Damien Rice and other singer-songwriters of that ilk.
What do you sing in the shower?
Hmmm, what did I sing this morning? I think it was Example – Changed The Way You Kissed Me, actually. Yeah, it was.
If you were a member of The A-Team, which one would you be?
Well, see, most people would say BA, but I’d definitely be Hannibal, if I could be any of them, because I’d want to have all the plans set out and control them all.
