Interviews: Rizzle Kicks

The Rizzle Kicks are taking over the world one trumpet at a time. The two London lads came and blew the socks off the Hollyoaks Music Show with their single Down with the trumpets. We caught up with them for a quick chat, it is fair to say the lads; Harley and Rizzle, enjoy a bit of banter...

How come only one of you got your name into the title?Rizzle Kicks
Rizzle(R):
It's seems unfair that my name is half the title doesn't it? But oh well, I discovered Harley's talents and I started it…
Harley(H): ….(sighs)

Apparently you knew each other way back in 1996?
R: We don't really remember but apparently we knew each other back then and it's through a series of coincidences that we've started this.

One of those coincidences being; playing Sunday league football together, who is better?
R: I don't know who is better now, but at the time I was in the A team and he was in the B team.
H: Only because the person who picked the team…
R: Basically the The A team is better than the B team
H: It was a new school, I didn't know anyone and I was asked to play football, it just happened to be the B team
R: Which is below the A team which I was in, so it's not really debatable.
H: Whatever…

And who are your teams?
R & H in unison: Arsenal!

We love the mariachi sample at the start of your track Down with the trumpets, what other influences will your debut album draw from?
R: We love the idea of sampling a lot, we like that old school hip-hop vibe.
H: We love the brass sections on tracks.
R: Yeah we've got some horn sections and what not, they kind of have a vibe about them we like.

Whats the song about?
H: It's just like a vibe you know? The trumpet part is a summery vibe, so we thought we'd just like to right to that vibe.
R: We got sent the beat and we wrote to that beat, and basically the beat gave off, yeah, a summery vibe like Harley said.

People seemed to enjoy it today?(Recording the show)
R: Yeah it was a laugh.
H: It was really fun the energy was really high even though we were last on.

Do you watch Hollyoaks?
R: I watch it more than Harley does, I used to be properly in to it, but with work nowadays I don't get as much of a chance to watch TV. I'm aware of all the situations that have gone down where we are sitting right now (outside the SU bar).

If you could pick any Hollyoaks set would it have been the skate park?
R: It's a good place to play, is it fairly new? I dunno, if I was going to choose anywhere it would have to be The Dog really wouldn't it?
H: What's The Dog?
R: It's the local pub, there's some serious issues gone on down there, but actually I'd say it is the club where all the biggest dramas have gone down.
Was it me or did Warren come back from the dead? I caught a glimpse and saw him the other week but I thought a big mirror smashed him in the face while he was on fire? Weird.

What else are you listening to at the minute?
R: Ed Sheeran is somebody we know and love, he is absolutely smashing it. A Team is a banging single. What else? Hmm Maverick Sabre's new single is wicked.
We both love the Arctic Monkeys.
H: Yeah their new album is amazing.
R: Oh, Asteroid Galaxy Tour too they are like my new favourite band, their on a new advert. They did that song for that iPod advert too, they are sick.

What's next for The Rizzle Kicks?
R: Still making tunes.
H: We've got some cool gigs lined up.
R: Hopefully people will get behind Trumpets and it will do alright we've got a single coming up with Olly Murs soon he's a geezer.
H: We're focusing on making a good record.
R: Other than that we get to go to Ibiza and get paid! Argghhhhh
H: Ibiza Rocks and Mallorca Rocks are going to be amazing just because you know, the sun, the sea, the sand…

What's the one item of clothing you couldn't live without?
H: My hat! I don't think I've gone without my hat in like four years.
R: That is literally a lie!
H: Well pretty much
R: I reckon you wear a hat like 80% of the time. You didn't wear a hat during the gig at Jazz Café.
H: Yeah but I was wearing it during the day. I just took it off for the gig.
R: And Carlisle?
H: I was wearing it for Carlisle, you chucked it on the floor during the gig.
R: Oh yeah.
R: My item would probably be my boxers, actually no my socks, I could probably go commando, but I never want sweaty feet. I wear a lot of white t shirts too, so I'd say white t shirts or socks.
