Interviews: The Wombats

We caught up with Matthew ‘Murph’ Murphy, Dan Haggis and Tord Øverland-Knudsen of The Wombats to find out who gets the most fashion compliments as well as how they found out that they were techno fans.

Who gets the most compliments on their dress sense??
Murph:
I guess it’s me with this white blazer, it has been described as an iconic look.

Do you steal each other’s clothes when you are constantly touring and living out of a suitcase?
Murph:
No we don’t steal each other’s clothes, at least to my knowledge anyway, but we often end up wearing very dirty, smelly, rancid clothes. They can’t smell you onstage though, so it’s alright.
(best get over to Matalan.co.uk then lads)

Best gig that you’ve done so far?
Murph:
Groove in the Moo, Sydney show. It was our first headline show, it was late at night, the skies were clear and everyone went mad!
Dan: We did a gig in Rome recently – it was the hottest gig we’ve ever done and we all ended up crowd-surfing.
Tord: The Liverpool Echo Arena gig stands out too though, huge venue, homecoming gig, ticks all the boxes.

Any disastrous gigs?
Murph
: Sziget Festival in Hungary. It was a good gig, but I fell over. That was a bit embarrassing. I did a full-on summersault type thing as I fell on my back!

Were you trying to perform some sort of theatrics at the time?
Yeah, it always happens when I try and rock out too hard.

Track of year?
Tord:
Jessie J – Price-Tag.

Something that you listen to in the car?
Murph:
Depeche Mode – Stripped.

A song that you sing in the shower?
Murph
: Steve Winwood – Higher Love.

A song that gets you moving in the morning?
Murph:
The sound of our tour manager’s voice usually gets me going.

What made you swap the valleys of Monmouth, Wales for the bright lights of L.A. to record your latest album? Surely it can’t be the weather?
Murph:
You can record in Timbuktu, you’re still essentially trapped inside a studio all day. It was nice though to have the weekends free to hang about LA in the sun.

We know that you’ve covered the Postman pat theme tune and the Fireman Sam one, but what song if any could you pick to cover? Hollyoaks theme tune perhaps?
Murph:
Not quite. Probably Wichita Lineman by Jimmy Webb, performed by Glen Campbell, it is an all time classic.
Dan: Neil Young – After the Goldrush

And Finally tell us the story behind your latest track you performed for us today, ‘I Never Knew I was a Techno fan’?
Murph:
I went to a minimal techno rave in Shoreditch with my ex-girlfriend. She broke out in a rash. It was fun….most of our songs are autobiographical.
